hey guys

i have a customer, who is in a different city, would like to deal directly with me ( we will not finish the transaction through ebay or other websites) and make the payment via paypal, , i am wondering after receving the clear payment and shipping the item out, if he has any chance to defraud me by filing a chargeback or whatever reasons to get his money back? i am interested in such deals but i also want to make sure if there exists any risk since i dont want to lose both my item and my money. thanks.

The risks are the same whether its a website transaction or private.

Even on ebay transactions you can get chargebacks etc or disputes for item not received or not as described.

What you have to do is minimise the risks and protect yourself as much as possible but as in real life bricks and morter selling you are going to lose out sometimes.

thanks for your reply. but what if he sent the payment as type of personal, instead of purchase, wil he still have the chance to get his money back by any method?

if he sends  personal > gift then it is very doubtful he would get any money back HOWEVER that option should not really be used for purchases.

alright got you, i think i will request him to send as purchse-goods but in this case, he'll have the chance to file a chargeback or else. wow, risk exists everywhere. btw, do you happen to know if this will be under paypal seller protection if i ship to a paypal confirmed address? thanks for your help so far!

You have the same seller protection as if it was an ebay transaction BUT you must make sure you fulfil all the seller protection criteria so its best to double check all of those first AND check that the transaction is seller protection eligable in the details of the buyers payment.

Nothing is risk free, if it is mega pricey think it through carefully.

thanks again for your reply. i just came up with another question: how can i know that if a paypal payment is from his credit card or bank transfer or existing funds? as i know, if it is from credit card it usually takes at least a few more hours to verify, right? and is it less risky if the payment is from bank transfer or existing funds? thanks

Hi lc124367272,

kernowlass has provided excellent information but I thought I would jump in and answer your last few questions.

As a seller, you would not know if a buyer paid using a card, bank or their PayPal balance.  The only time you would know is if the payment is sent as an echeck because then you'll know it definitely is coming from the buyer's bank.

Credit card payments are instant so you would receive the funds immediately after the buyer initiates the payment with a card.  While the risks between card, bank and PayPal balance payments may be different, there will always be some risk.  Like kernowlass said, the best way to protect yourself is to follow PayPal Seller Protection rules and tips.

I hope this helps! 😄
