Puzzled by recent purchase

I'm accustomed to purchases I make coming out of my PayPal account. Tonight I made a 39.50 USD purcahse from a company in Hong Kong. My PP balance is over $44 yet the system's only options were to take funds from my credit card or checking account. Is this normal? Does it have something to do with having a low balance? Does it have something to do with the seller being in Hong Kong? Just trying to understand how the system works. Thanks. (forgot to check the "email notification" option, so it may take me a while to follow-up any responses. sorry.)

Now, I'm a little more puzzled. The confirmation email from PayPal states:

"Any money in your PayPal account at that time will be used before any other payment source."

But didn't see such a statement on the payment page. This may all sort itself out, but if anyone has additional info, I'd still like to here it. Thanks again.

Hi FrameShooter,

You are correct. PayPal will use available money in your PayPal account to fund a purchase before going to the bank or card.  It's hard to say exactly why this was happening but my initial instinct is that the business was actually charging you in a different currency.

I hope you have found an answer by now but if not, the best option is to contact Customer Support so they can check that payment to determine the cause.

I hope this helps! 🙂
