A friend just notified me that Square is coming out with an emv reader, a bit bigger than their old reader, but still fits on top of a cell phone. Will PayPayl be coming out with something similar?? And soon????

I have the exact same question Paypal and I am surprised that you are not answering this question. I am getting ready to pull out and go with Square as well if these basic questions are not answered. If square can do you, Paypal certainly can.

Not only is the Square reader only $49, but they will reimburse processing fees up to $49 within the first 3 months. I have ordered my Square reader. I know it will come later in the year, but honestly, in my line of business (health coaching), I am not as concerned about fraud.

Thanks for reaching out to us here! I'm afraid we don't have any plans to announce at this time, but we will let you know if/when we do!

The time to announce is here! The information on theEMV page has not changed in 4 months. You brag about how many merchants use PayPal Here, but you need to remember that that is a lot of units to get out. Will you be able to do it, or do we need to look elsewhere?
In addition, as brick and mortar merchants move to only accepting EMV cards, the scam artists will be looking for places to use their fraudulent magnetic strip cards, and mobile merchants will be vulnerable without the new readers. You may have only had an occasional chargeback in the past, but look for that to increase greatly if we are not able to upgrade. You would think that PayPal would want us to be more secure sooner, rather than later.
I accept mobile payments in Florida where the humidity often affects magnetic strips as well as the PayPal Here reader, meaning I have to key in almost half of the transactions at the higher fee. These new readers will correct that, so I am eager to get one!

I have the exact same question. I'm just getting started with PayPal Here and am concerned about the changes in 2015. If I'm going to have to switch to another provider that has EMV-compliant equipment in October, I'd actually rather do it now.
Any word yet, PayPal?
Thanks.

I totally agree the sooner the better, However it seem foolish to rush one that isn't totally 100% reliable. My question would be if we all knew this was coming HOW is it that YOU weren't prepared in advance? Juist a question! I'm definitely looking forward to it's release as it's a required tool.

I have a problem with the fact that the regular user fee is 2.7% ok that was the signed agreement upfront. The problewm is that the manual entry fee is 3.5%, Ok I can see that, maybe? The real gist of the situation is that without the reader for the new card I HAVE TO ENTER everything manually. How can YOU justify the extra charge WITHOUT having the REQUIRED equipment available? I would have to request some sort of adjustment to this until the REQUIRED reader is available , after that It would be up to me to get the new one.

New cards still have the mag stripe so there is no manual entry required. The rules say that if the processor (PayPal) does not provide a reader, they are liable.
All of this only applies if the customer is fraudulent - if you know & trust your customer, no problem.
I just wish PayPal would not charge $150 when Square is now charging $49. I am small and will not even get rebate for the full $49 -- But to be on top of things, I have already ordered my new Square reader which is not promised before the end of 2015.
Research showed the next closest company reader is over $400, which is why I guess PayPal is charging so much.
All I can say is "Kudos to SQUARE."

I had an email converstaion with PayPal support about the difference in price between PayPal's EMV reader and Square's. Their reply was less than encouraging. To paraphrase, they said tough. I'm guessing they will change the price after the initial swarm. It realy kills me that I have to go elsewhere for this as I've been with PayPal for so long. I only do a few shows a year and would never make the requirements for the rebate.
Congratulations on the money grab PayPal. Guess you don't want the little guy to use you. This thread has been going on a long time and still not response from them. Looks like I'll be going to Square.
