A friend just notified me that Square is coming out with an emv reader, a bit bigger than their old reader, but still fits on top of a cell phone. Will PayPayl be coming out with something similar?? And soon????

Hi alaskagypsy,

Thanks for reaching out to us here! I'm afraid we don't have any plans to announce at this time, but we will let you know if/when we do!

In an email I just received from PayPal the other day there is a scary message...

"What happens October 1, 2015? The liability for fraudulent charges made on a non-EMV-compliant card reader shifts from the card industry to merchants that accept card payments."

So is PayHere going to become EMV compliant some how? If not, we will be forced over to using another service to minimize our risk and that would be sad because we love PayPal and have been using it from the start.

FYI for anyone wondering. I got a reply on this subject directly from the support team. Here is the email they sent me..

Dear Glenn Schworak,

Thank you for contacting PayPal Customer Support. My name is Jeremy and I am happy to assist you.

We will be releasing a new card reader that will be able to read the EMV credit cards prior to October 1st. Customers will be notified via email and on our website once these card readers are available. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Have a great day!

I see where PayPal will offer an EMV reader before the deadline of Oct 1.  I am wondering if it will cost us anything.  Square is going to charge $29 for theirs.  If PayPal Here will be free or minimal it will take more market share.  We users of PayPal Here will certainly be happy.

I have the same question. And how are they charging for the fee to use the new reader.

It is now Mid September 2015.   Will I receive my EMV reader prior to the deadline of Oct 1, 2015?

If I do not, will I be responsible for all charges I accept without it?

I've been receiving the email updates about the EMV Readers. My question I guess is what about those of us that accept Your form of payment, but are VERY small scale? The cost of your Reader is Outrageous and being small scale, many of us may not come even Close to the $amount required for the Rebate. (Which still leaves your Reader twice what Square is ) Any solutions for those of us that don't use the service enough to qualify for the Rebate and also can't afford the price of it? Are we just stuck then manualy entering and then still ending up paying more because of the higher % for manal entry?

I too have the same question.  Are people going to switch to Square then?  Perhaps Paypal has enough business that they don't care about the small business?  I am considering it for sure.  Plus Square is available now and it's Sept 10th 2015.  I don't see the payal emv reader coming out in the next 20 days.

I posted a question about the cost of the PayPal EMV reader being $149, while Square's is $49. My business is just starting up and will not qualify for the rebate. Perhaps PayPal no longer wants to support small businesses?
