Buyer made an assumption based on the actual photos of an unopened box and wants a refund

Buyer wanted a hard drive to connect to his pc with only a usb cable.

The item I sold connects with a usb cable and a small power supply.

My description was taken from the manufacturer's info only and my photos are from the actual item box.

The photos (which the buyer says are misleading) do not show the usb cable or the power cord in them.

I listed the item as an external hard drive (what the manufacturer calls it).

The buyer did not understand that the type of drive he wants is specifically called  a portable drive (to highlight its usually smaller size and the fact that it uses only a single usb 3.0 cable for both data and power).

He wants a full refund and for me to pay return shipping because he says my item was not as described and the photos are misleading.

Is it worth disputing this or requesting that he pay for return shipping?

Any useful insight appreciated.

Well, your picture was not accurate; that's your problem.

A buyer expects the picture to accurately describe the item.  Furthermore, the description needs to also accurately describe the product.  The buyer can't pickup up the item and look at so, so the picture(s) and description need show the details.  It seems that your description failed to show details also.

If you are selling a direct manufacturer item  you could reference manufacturer details, not just what's on the box.

Selling computer components is high risk for both buyer and seller and seller needs to take the lead in making sure there are no missing or conflicting details.

Tell buyer to return the item and get return shipping paid by PayPal (read terms and conditions): https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/returns

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂
