Canceled – Money Received

So this is a long story but I will try to be as brief yet detailed as possible. I bough an item from a member of a forum. I paid him in full for the item via paypal gift. He sent me the items no problem. When mailing the item he forgot to include the remote controls. I asked him about them and he said he would ship right away. After a week of waiting I needed a remote still. So I went out and bought one on my own. I text him that I couldn't wait anymore and I went out and just bought a new remote. He text back stating that he would reimburse me the full ammount of the purchased remote. He asked that I send him a paypal request for the ammount owed ($102). On the 20th of July he paid with an e-check. Natrually the payment sat in my paypal window pending and was scheduled to clear today 7/27/16. When I checked my paypal account this morning I see this message Canceled – Money Received and a line drawn through the ammount. The money has not posted to my paypal acct. I text him and he stated that the money has been taken from his account. What does this mean? I did not cancel the transaction and he states that he didn't either.

Well someone or something cancelled it.  Weird.  Could be the bank?  Have your guy call his bank.  Next time, for your protection, do not send money as gift if the payment is for goods and services.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

When you tap on the transaction, what information or details about the cancelation itself show up? It don't say who or why it was canceled does it? Without revealing too much, of course.  Did you get an email regarding the cancellation?  They usually give you more info there.

The transaction details don't say cancelled by anyone. It says Sent by: His name, the ammount, the fee which is 0.00 and the total. On the main summary line though the ammount is crossed through.

It is just strange to me that on the last day of the clearing process it cancelled. I would think it would say insufficient funds if it was a problem with his account. It saying "money received" has me scratching my head. Money received...by who?

Did he also send the money as family/friends rather than goods/services?

If so, this probably presented securirty risk for PayPal.   You sent someone free money; days later that person sends money back to you in the same amount based on a request.  This could be an issues if either party already had some risky transactions.

You could call PayPal for specific innformation.

I sent him a request for money for the $102 I should have been charged a fee for requesting the money. He did not request the money from our original transaction I just sent it as a gift/friends and family. The 2 transactions were a month apart so I don't know if paypal would have noticed. I have sent a message into their message center in hopes of getting some clarity on what I need to do next. I was just hoping someone here had been in a similar situation or had the same issue.

Money Received means personal payment type.  If it was a goods and service payment type, it would say Payment Received there.

I discovered this as I was looking at my transactions list the other day and I noticed the two descriptors and thought why some transactions were tagged MR and some tagged as PR and sure enough, that was the difference.  And that makes sense because PayPal need some way to distinguish between the payment types.
