HORRIBLE IDEA TO HOLD FUNDS FOR 21 DAYS!!!

Holding funds from sellers until the buyer leaves feedback is the worst idea EVER! Since when does Paypal become an authority on buyer satisfaction?? A smooth transaction is all that I wanted from Paypal. If they are going to hold funds, then they should make it very clear BEFORE you use them!  Keeping my money in their account for 21 days is a HUGE disadvantage of using Paypal. Stick to transferring funds, not trying to be a satisfaction authority!

Ah yes, Brandenburgs, you are one of the posters I recall reading about.  You expose another of the Paypal fraudulent "reasons" for imposing the 21 day hold.  The real reason, as has been noted, is "because they can."

Shameful, isn't it?

Tell me, Red, do you also think the rapacious bankers who gave birth to the mortgage/foreclosure scandal are good guys? I agree that it's always a good idea to read what you sign, but if am agreement is open-ended and subject to change, do you think there are no limits to what the vendor can do? If so, yours appears to be a narrowly defined concept of "ethical."

Yeah I think it's perfectly ethical to do what they told you they could.

Well, that explains a lot. From my view, the mortgage/foreclosure scandal was based upon unethical decisions by greedy bankers, who took advantage of ignorant buyers--many of whom should have known better. Similarly, Paypal, in its greed, is currently taking advantage of its customers--though in this case, it is even worse in some ways, because the customer/consumer is the lender as well as the victim!

Your exactly right Terese2

Paypal is taking advantage of you because your blind, ignorant or both.

If you don't like their policies then you know what to do(continue to agree to them)....bicker and complain and have a complete lack of rational thought!

But my account is on hold, and I have not used it for ebay since this past April.  I started a side business installing gutters this past February, and offered Paypal as a payment option to customers that happened to have a Paypal account.  Everything was going great until this hold happened.  I have never had a problem, or dispute or anything.  I can't afford to have my money tied up for 21 days - there's no way.  I need the money to be able to purchase supplies for my next job.  It is not as if I have to offer Paypal to my customers, it was just nice to be able to.

So for me - this has nothing to do with eBay.  It is a completely different situation, yet with the same end result.  I can't use Paypal anymore.

I had even had a "We Accept Paypal" sticker on my truck and had it printed on my invoices.  I had to scrape off the sticker and take it off the invoice template too.  I used to love Paypal - I still hold out hope that they will come to their senses.

After what has happened with the credit downgrade and the stockmarket, however, I wonder how much of this is just them trying to make some money off of interest until things calm down.  The timing is suspect, in my opinion.

It is very sad you had to remove the sticker and that you will have to mark it out on your invoices, but when you don't use Paypal since April, they have a tendency to not know your history of selling and delivering the product, so you have to prove you are not a risk by, ahhh SELLING.

As stated before, not having sold since April is putting you into what they consider to be a risk category. It states clearly in the policies, and it always has, that there are times monies will be held if there appears to be a risk. No recent history is just one of the red flags for categorization as a possible risk.

Times are hard for many people and businesses. If the US can be in trouble, then what makes anyone here think Paypal who actually carries eBay (yes, read it for yourself) does not need to institute protection against having to cover the funds owed to buyers by sellers who take the buyers money, don't ship, don't have any money in Paypal and no money in the back up funding. No business is a bottomless pit able to cover any and all that the buyer, in this case, has protection against.

If Paypal holding funds (until they know they don't have to cover a chargeback because the seller has no money in Paypal or the bank) is the worst that is happening in the lives of those posting the same things repeatedly, be thankful for what you do have.

Is there not a single seller here who has $25 to ship a couple of packages, wait for that shipping money to be released in a few minutes to 24 hours and then use the released funds to ship more packages? What makes anyone here think that Paypal should not have a hold when most do?

If you use ebay, you HAVE to use paypal which totally s.u.c.k.s..

I hate paypal, I've always hated paypal and since ebay took it over it's only gotten worse!

and yes Djten, Now even people who do business outside of ebay are having their funds held. Read the new hold policy.

Does anyone have a suggestion of another pay service that can be used as well as another auction site?

Good point 7yearseller, everyone does realize that PayPal isn't the only company that has this " unethical" (lol) type of policy?

I am livid!!  How dare Paypal keep my funds.  I need to pay my bills just like the rest.  We need to stop using the service as a whole and show them that this is absolutely absurd.  This is our monies.  I respond to my ebay buyers at once.  I send, package, and mail (properly) all my items IMMEDIATELY!!  I want my money immediately!!
