EBAY VIRUS ALERT!!!!!

There is a virus floating around ebay right now.  Trust and Safety say that a significant number of users are being affected.

The virus appears as a pop-up on some listings, asking for your Social Security number and to fill in some mis-spelled words.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR SSN to this popup.  Close the WINDOW from the top of your browser and then delete the window when you restart Firefox or start a new session.

This is a serious issue, folks - removal of the virus involves reformatting your hard drive and your SSN can be used for identity theft.

Thanks for the heads up on that, I didn't know about the virus but I know about the other stuff though.

"Trust and Safety says..."  -- Can you point to some announcement by T&S, or anyone from eBay?

No.

The information comes from a fellow powerseller that I have found to be accurate.

Since ebay has always maintained that their system is impregnable, I'm not surprised that T&S is dubious.

Let me make it clear as well that it isn't the ebay platform that's infected - it's certain listings IN the platform.

If you get a listing where your mouse-pointer changes to a hand, no matter where you put it, close the browser window and start over.  Note the listing number and report it.

Yes, I have seen some listings like that--the whole listing is in fact just one large image that is used as a link to another site, where you WILL get scammed, or infected with a virus.

What if I am getting the popup everytime I try to log into Ebay or PayPal? It is asking for my social security number, my credit card number, along with my pin and 3 or 4 digit code. I don't get the same popup on my other computers - just my office machine. Is this a virus on my computer - or could it be a legitimate thing, since I am operating behind a corporate firewall? Thanks for your insight!

I just received an e-mail supposedly from PayPal saying that my account was being limited. No reason specified. When I opened the message it just gave information boxes to fill out including Name, Address, Credit Card number and SS number etc. I tried to login to Paypal from their screen to see where it would take me but the login didn't work. I am now going to forward the e-mail to Paypal so they can address this issue.
