Debt owing and asking for credit card on log in

I went to pay for an item, and a pop Up box said I need to pay a debt, and link a credit card. I have a linked bank account that I top up when needed, and there’s always enough $ in there for my purchases. Why is paypal asking for a credit card now ? .

Even if you have a balance on your account, it's common for PayPal to request for a credit or debit card be on file as well for security reasons and to act as a back up funding source.

Also even if you have a bank account unless you have a card as well any bank transfer will go as an echeque and take a few days to clear.
