Can someone explain Merchant fees in plain English?

Can someone pleas explain fees in plain English?  I am in the US and all my clients are US based.  I provide legal support services and charge clients for my time and services provided.   All I can find is the percentage I am charged might be 3.49 percent and then there's an additional fixed fee, but what that fee is I have no idea and the rate of 3.49 percent doesn't add up or seem consistent.  I am never able to find any clear and precise information on paypal just pages and pages of information that makes no sense to  me.  Can anyone help?

This is a non answer.  This is the same very vague information I question specifically states I was not understanding.  What SPECIFICALLY is the percentage I am charged and what is the fixed fee and why do I have to dig through pages of converting one form of currency to another when all my transactions are ONLY in USD and STILL not find this information every just clearly stated anywhere???    

My question simply put is what is the percentage I am charged on each transaction and what is the fixed fee I am also charged for each transaction?  And can someone tell me why that is such a hard question to answer
