Browser windows crashed mid transcation, no record of it and I can't recover my money. Please Help

I wanted to pay an online merchant $X + shipping. I used the "Express Payment" button on the merchant's checkout page which popped up a browser and made me login to my paypal account and make the payment. It immediately deducted $X from my bank account (I used a debit card), taking me to the shipping page where it showed the grand total $X + shipping. This is when my browswer window crashed. There is no trace of that transcation in my PayPal account, neither did I recieve any E-Mails related to it. The only "communication", or at this point, the only proof I have of that transaction ever happening is a puny notification in my PayPal notifications that is attached, which conviniently disappeared when I tried to expand on it but mistakenly clicked "OK" [FML]. I wasn't logged in to the merchant's website either[FML x2] .Resolution center wont allow me to raise a complaint till I can refer to that transaction, which I just cannot.
Is there any way I can recover this amount or did a browser crash just cost me an amount that is significant to me, in exchange for absolutely nothing.
