45$ returned item charges for a 5.28$ purchase?

I have recently tried to buy something though paypal(5.28$) and did not have the sufficient funds but, paypal charged me 45$ for returned item charges. What do i do? Thanks

Welcome to the PayPal Community! I'm sorry to hear you've you've experienced a $45 returned item fee. PayPal does not charge any fees for a failed or declined transaction. Any fee like that would normally be charged by your bank or debit/credit card. I would recommend reaching out to your funding source to see what options are available to assist with that fee.
