Subscription refund not working

A website informed me that the only way to cancel their subscription is through PayPal whilst PayPal would only allow me to stop the payments being issued however that the subscription could still go on unannounced, I did this and requested a refund but PayPal needed a cancelation number to go forward with the refund, I have not received a cancelation number anywhere

 I do understand your concern with this. In order for PayPal to process a refund for a subscription, we must receive sufficient evidence that you cancelled the subscription before you were charged. This is part of our disputes process. 

 

If you did not cancel the subscription before you were charged, or you don't have evidence of doing so then PayPal would not be able to process a refund. 

 

As the merchant has charged you, they will have the option to issue you a refund. I would suggest you contact them directly again to request a refund.
