Sent money to closed PayPal account but it's left my account

It was a payment to a friend. They've said they've closed the PP account so can't access the funds however it has come out of my bank account. Is it true that if it's come out of my bank account, it has gone through to their Paypal? What happens to funds sent to the PP account when it is closed? Does PayPal warn you and ask you to transfer to your bank account as I'm assuming it won't let you close with funds in it. Can the receiver re-open an account to claim the money to send it back? Do they get a notification to say they have been sent money even if account is closed? I just need to know if it's possible for money to be sat in a PayPal account and be completely inaccessible and if it is possible to access it, how this is done. Thank you.

How much of a 'friend' is your friend?

Only SENT means the funds have successfully completed to the email address you sent it to that is linked to an open paypal account.

If he had closed his account then the funds on your paypal account would show as UNCLAIMED.

Its a scammers trick to get you to use the friends/family option and then pretend that they have not received the funds for varying reasons knowing you can't file a dispute as you have no buyer protection, so as I said a real friend or not?
