Prevent automatic payments by default

Is it possible to prevent automatic payment by default? I know how to cancel the automatic payment once it is created, but it would be much better not to be created at all...

Welcome to the PayPal Community, this is a great question. Unfortunately, this is more of a merchant setting, and not necessarily a buyer preference. You do have the opportunity - like you referenced - to stop the billing agreement after the transaction is processed. However, there is not a way to opt-out of billing agreements prior to checking out with a specific merchant.
