This happened to me, and there's no help from Paypal. Paypal ignored my "preferred account" setting altogether, and overdrew an account that I haven't used in years.
Thanks paypal! Your circular self-service help menu is completely worthless, and customer service is non-existent!

Maybe you should all take a look at automatic payments if you made payments previously on another card/checkings or savings account.
You should look the payment say for instance netflix and see what the second option is set too, in the automatic sections you can transfer those settings to your preferred card checking or savings account.
