If you add a bank account to your paypal account then you set up a direct debit payment so you can pay the sellers you buy from.
If you cancel the direct debit then payments from your bank account will fail unless you have your debit card linked as well.

But before September it did not apper as a DD so how is a 'kid' going to know that they will get charge failed DD fees when they don't know they have or even know what a DD is?,

The direct debit appears the second you add a bank account to your paypal account.
And you don't get charged BY a direct debit, you get charged when you pay a seller and fund that payment from your bank account.
Presumably your daughter must have bought something using paypal so how did she intend to fund that payment if not from her bank account, and if she chose the bank account then she should have enough funds in that bank account to pay the seller.
If she buys something without enough funds in her bank account then of course she would pay overdrawn fees.

Why is this ssite full of people asking the same questions if it has always neen like this? I can look back at my bank statements and it never said DD before shes 19 and didn't set up a DD paypal took the money from her account each time she bought something as with everyone but it was not classed as a Dd so would not incur failed DD debit payment just a failed payment £60 is ridiculous will be talking to the bank and Pay pal about this!

How the heck do you think that paypal can take funds from your bank account WITHOUT a direct debit mandate to allow them to???
If you are NOT using a debit card then of course you have to have a direct debit set up.
You will find any company that needs to take payments from your bank account eg water / electric / telephone ALL have to have a direct debit with your bank account so that when you pay they can take it from your bank account.
But go ask your bank as it should give them a good laugh.

Advert for paypal why do you think I have ANYTHING to do with paypal???
You and your daughter do have problems understanding anything don't you.
This is NOT paypal, its a user to user help forum and I have NOTHING to do with paypal.
And of course you will look
But I understand now why both you and your daughter are having problems understanding a simple thing like a direct debit mandate.
And also why you are so rude to someone trying to explain the FACTS to you.
Byeeee

Hi There, so reading up on this i do understand what Northy (think that was their name) was saying. ive been using paypal for years now and i noticed this year that all of a sudden my payments were being taken out as per a direct debit. i had a problem with my old account and had to close it and since opening the new account its taken out as direct debit instead of as a regular payment. i wondered why all of a sudden my payments were being made as direct debits instead of regular transactions?
