why was my account charged twice?

My bank account was charged twice on the same day, the same amount. when i check my paypal account, it has no record of the payment coming out, and claims i still owe the amount its already taken twice.
the vendor only got one payment, and has seen no other traffic from my account since.

the original payment was started on 1/31/23, but did not try to come out of my account until 2/2/23, however due to an emergency i did not have money that one day, and was given a chargeback. my account was then in the negative by the amount of the original payment. when i got paid the next day on the 3rd i told paypal to take the amount it needed from my account. the payment appears to have processed on the 6th, but it happened twice. one after the other, of the same amount on the same day. when i login to paypay however, it still says i owe that amount, and has no record of the payments coming out despite it having happened a day ago.
i can find no explanation anywhere on the site as to why the amount came out twice, and why it is not showing up here in any way? and i cannot get ahold of the help agents, or find a help email. do i have to get the bank itself to chargeback the 2nd payment?

Kind of tricky since you have to make sure you dispute the right transaction at your bank since PayPal has record of only one transaction and the merchant was paid once, and you don’t want to end up disputing the merchant’s received payment, they did nothing wrong. They’d get charged chargeback fees. Maybe get the merchant to undo the transaction by refunding instead of you charging back for the time being. They’d still be responsible for the PayPal fees but perhaps you guys can work something out, like just authorizing the merchant to refund the net amount they received after PayPal fees. If you explain this to the merchant about duplicate transactions at your bank, I’m sure they can understand. Then you can dispute the transaction at your bank that didn’t get refunded.

You have a number of things going on: insufficient funds, duplicate transactions, missing transaction in PayPal, a negative PayPal balance and it still say you owe, merchant paid once, how much too much.

Also check the statuses of both transactions at your bank. Are they both listed as pending or both posted? Or did one of them remain as Pending. Pending would be an authorization hold, and weren’t technically transferred over to the merchant. The pending hold would eventually expire if the funds weren’t captured by merchant..

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂
