Understanding basic PayPal security

Is the CreditCard number or token that PayPal uses to pay vendors unique to each client/vendor transaction?  With a regular credit card, if a vendor gets hacked (and that happens too often) and the card info for their clients is compromised, how useful is the number they get from PayPal?  I have had a few instances where a vendor of mine has been compromised and 1) my 'regular' credit card is used for fraudulent transactions and/or 2) I need to cancel that card, get a new one and go to all the vendors where I use the card for recurring transactions and update them.

Virtual Credit Card systems do this but seem to be coming less available.   Does the PayPal systems help with this problem?
