Extra charges on two seperate purchases now on my direct debit card. Four charges in total, not small amounts either on extra charges. No record of them on paypal just on my direct debit card record, main on the same date and within a minute of my autorised charges. The unauthorized money transactions still held by my bank but its money I can't use. What is going on PayPal, why the extra charges

Sounds to me like your were scammed. You possibly got duped into going to a site that looked like the PayPal site, logged in, and authorized the payment. They then took that information and ran up a few more payments. This would be the reason as to why they are not reflected on your PayPal activity sheet due to the fact they never went through PayPal. The charges on your bank statement should read from PAYPAL. If they say anything besides that, they are not PayPal charges, they are charges from an individual that has stolen your information.
Seeing as you state that even the authorized charges are not showing up on PayPal either, I would suspect that this is the most likely scenario. You purchase something from a site, they have a PayPal button, you clicked it and it went to a site that is an exact copy of the PayPal.com site. Without realizing it, you logged in, authorized the payment. What you may have really done, was to give them your financial information without realizing it.
If the charges are indeed from PAYPAL, contact their support (PayPal.com > "help" > scroll down to "contact us" click that and submit the information by Phone, email or online chat). They will be able to help you better there. This is peer to peer help, not PayPal support.

Hello @ND1982 and @Grimreepr,
Welcome! Thanks for posting in the Community!
I'm sorry to hear about the duplicate charges appearing on your debit card statement. Do the charges show as completed transactions or authorizations? When you first make a payment, you may first see a temporary authorization, which is a pending hold, and then shortly after, you'll see the completed transaction go through. Some banks automatically release the authorization immediately once the completed transaction goes through, but others will hold it for 7-10 business days after, just in case there are any adjustments to your payment. If you don't see the authorization fall off after ten business days, please reach out to your bank.
Alternatively, if the two extra charges do also show as completed transactions, please grab a copy of your bank statement and reach out to Customer Support for further investigation. You can review the different options for contacting Customer Support on our Help Center here.
I hope this helps and the extra charges are removed right away!
