My identity has been stolen (Someone is using my name and photograph on slightly different username)

Hi,

Quite a while ago (3 years roughly 2020 Dec), my sister searched for my paypal, and sent money for xmas presents.

She found my name and photo, sent money, but was to a random email address (she didnt notice this at first).

She was able to get the money refunded eventually.

But my name and photo to this date is still searchable on paypal, linked to someone else.

I assume the account is worthless and scammers cannot actually use the money if it is sent, as the debit cards or bank details will not be in my name.

But I need that account closed, so more people don't accidentally send money to the wrong account.

It has happened twice in the last 3 months, where I have been sent money by friends or relatives, and they have sent the money to this fraudulent account.

Eventually they seem to be able to get the money back, but it takes weeks, and generally a distressing hassle.

I am not comfortable with my name and photo being used on a different account where it can trick people.

To date, paypal have not been able to take that account down.

As I could not access the email address it is linked to, but how could I when it is not my email address in the first place.

Any help and advice would be most welcome.

I'm sorry to hear about this situation. To address this issue, you should contact PayPal support and provide them with detailed information about the fraudulent account using your name and photo. Explain the potential risks and inconveniences it has caused, emphasizing the need to take down or unlink your personal information from that account. Be prepared to provide any supporting evidence, such as screenshots, transaction details, and any relevant communication with PayPal regarding the issue. Follow up persistently with PayPal to ensure they thoroughly investigate and take appropriate action. It may also be helpful to review PayPal's policies and terms of service regarding identity and account verification to better understand the steps you and PayPal can take to resolve this matter effectively.

Given the situation you've described, it's concerning that your name and photo are still linked to another PayPal account, potentially causing confusion and leading to funds being sent to the wrong account. Here are some steps you can take: Contact PayPal Support Again: Reach out to PayPal support through their official channels. Clearly explain the situation, emphasizing the potential for confusion and the recurring issue of funds being sent to the wrong account. Provide Details: Include as much detail as possible, such as your name, the email address linked to your account, any transaction IDs, and a clear description of the problem. Attach any relevant screenshots or evidence to support your case. Emphasize Security Concerns: Stress the security implications of having your name and photo associated with a different account, and express your concern about potential misuse. Escalate the Issue: If you don't receive a satisfactory response, consider escalating the issue by requesting to speak to a supervisor or manager within PayPal's support. Check Privacy Settings: Review your own PayPal account settings to ensure that your information is set to private and not easily searchable. Legal Advice: If the problem persists and you are unable to get a resolution from PayPal, consider seeking legal advice to understand your options for protecting your personal information. Remember to be persistent in your efforts to resolve the issue, and document all communication with PayPal for reference. It's important to address this situation promptly to prevent further complications.
