Scam or legit?

Hello I have a vacation rental. I have a guest that booked and sent us PayPal payment after I sent an invoice for 50% deposit. It looks like I received the deposit when I checked my PayPal account. But another amount equivalent to the balance showed up shortly after. So I thought “ok, they just wanted to pay for the whole thing now instead of when it’s due”. Then I received an email from the guest saying she didn’t intend to pay for the whole thing just the deposit and if I can send the other payment back. This rings a little too fishy for me. So how do I double check this?

That can happen if the buyer got confused and sent the other 50% by mistake but issue the refund using the “Refund this payment” link from within the second transaction. Just click the second transaction and you’ll see the refund link.

 

Just beware that the PayPal fees you originally paid on the second transaction won’t be refunded to you so you have to cover that in the full refund of second payment unless you only refunded the net amount received. Maybe discuss that with the guest before refunding since it was their mistake.
