Can someone explain where our money is and the steps I need to take to get it back?

This isn't a refund from the seller that I need, it's from Paypal.
My mother and I have used PayPal to place an order on an item on June 27; PayPal automatically subtracted the $600 from out bank account (using a direct debit card). However, I noticed a cheaper alternative to that item and decided to cancel the order with TigerDirect (the seller) before they finished processing my order--this means that TigerDirect never recieved the funds that PayPal subtracted from our bank account. TigerDirect successfully canceled it on their part, but PayPal never canceled the charge and left the transaction "In Process." I went through over a week's work of calling to get the payment to be canceled with Paypal and was gauranteed by a representative that the money would show up in our bank account on July 9th. We still have not seen the money added into our bank account balance or history.
Here's an oddity I'm not familiar with. Our bank account history showed the subtracted $600, but when PayPal finally canceled our payment in our PayPal account history, the subtracted transaction was completely missing in our bank account history. However, it doesn't seem like our balance was ever restored.
Are there other steps I can take? Should I call our bank? Can anyone explain why the transaction in our bank account history disappeared?

EDIT: To add on, our PayPal balance is still $0.00.

This thing just happened to me today. I called TigerDirect today and they said they never recieved payment yet my 339.00 is missing for my paypal balance. Whats going on?

You both need to contact PayPal Customer Service directly. This is a COMMUNITY Help Forum where users try to help other users with confusing issues. There is very little direct participation by PayPal Customer Service. For important things like this, log into your PayPal Account and go to the help pages and find how to contact PayPal Customer Service.
