Paying a fee when receiving from a friend?

I'm a somewhat new PayPal user, and I had a friend sell a few things for me on eBay. He told me he sent the money to me over PayPal. He sent me $5, then $85 shortly after. I saw my balance say "$86.78." That's not right...

I went to my activity page and it said next to the $5 transfer, there was a fee that said -$.45, and next to the $85 transfer it said -$2.77. I went to the help page, and this is what it said about receiving from a friend:

"It's free to receive money from friends or family in the U.S. when they send the money from the PayPal website using only their PayPal balance or their bank account, or a combination of their PayPal balance and bank account."

I don't want to have him give me $4 more because there was an error in the system or something. How can this problem be fixed?

When he sent the money he should have chose "Send as a GIFT".

He probably sent it as "buying goods, or payment owed"

I have sold through ebay using paypal in the past, I am using the same account and just sold a few more items on e-bay, it shows that they have been paid . How long before it shows a balance in my paypal account?
