Do Paypal's solutions require that the customer has a Paypal account?

After quickly having browsed the Paypal website, I have the impression that all the payment solutions require that the customer already has a Paypal account. If this is the case, Paypal is not useful in my case. I therefore wonder if someone could suggest an alternative.

If you open a business account you can access the website payment preferences in My Selling settings to enable Paypal Account Optional setting.
