It will show in your paypal account balance and activity more or less instantly as long as they have sent in a currency you can accept and have confirmed your email address.
However if its an echeque from a friends/family payment or because you don't have a back up card linked to your paypal account then it will show as pending with a clearance date.
If its a goods/services payment and you are a new seller then it would show as on hold as per link below.
