Inactive account notification by letter

I have received a letter from PayPal (not an email) about an inactive account relating to an email address which is shown partially redacted.  However, I can tell even with the redaction that this is not an email account I have ever had, nor have I ever had any account other than my present ( very much active) one.  The letter says I will be charged £9 if I do not reactivate this unknown account.  But I cannot access this supposed account as I do not know what the email address is.  I have been all round the houses with the help and messaging system to no avail.

Is this a scam?  I find it strange that PayPal would contact me by letter and also it is addressed to my husband but I am the PayPal account holder.  Can anyone help, please?

Certainly enough time has passed for PayPal to reveal what they know. That would be the decent thing to do. But so far zip. As you say Army, I can't see how this could be monetised but at the very least it's prompting me to change my PayPal passwords. When I spoke to them I forgot to ask if the redacted email address was available for them to reveal? Did you have any success with that? And it seems to be just a UK thing but I may be wrong about that.

Good evening,

I have scanned my letter (dated 23rd November) and emailed it to spoof@paypal.co.uk explaining in detail the reasons which make me very puzzled and suspicious about it all...

Five minutes after I sent it, I received this message:

So,this is it? I spent 20mn scanning that piece of nonsense and typing an email to be simply redirected to the Help Centre by an automated email??? What concerns me most is PayPal's lack of communication; I've been lucky so far, never to have had a dispute with PP but dread to think what would happen if I had one!!!

COME ON PAYPAL! LET US KNOW HERE WHAT'S GOING ON!

I received a letter too! But there is no way to contact paypal, tried via phone but they cut the call off.

Does anyone have an email address that I can contact Paypal?

You can do it from the website and they send you a confirmation email from<removed> - you could try that.

I have had this letter too. Ive no idea about the account or email address. I have one paypal Ive used for years.

I cant get past any security obviously and and now extremnely anxious about a potential fraud attempt. All I want now is for paypal to shut the account down and unlink any of my details from it but as I cant give them the full email address it seems nothing can be done?!

I received one today to our home address but with someone else’s name which really worries me. We haven’t had any parcels delivered to this address but how did they get our address details?! I’ve sent a photo of the letter to the fraud dept at PayPal. It does make me very much question their security protocol.

Thank you to all 37 folks who have replied and to the 1700 or so who have read my post.  It seems to be a widespread problem and I would particularly like to thank army360 for such a comprehensive analysis and useful suggestion.  His post can be found on page 4 and I intend to follow his idea of emailing a copy of the letter to spoof@paypal.do.uk .  If we all do this then perhaps such a bombardment would make PayPal take notice
