Trying to avoid roaming charges, Mexican number not accepted

We are travelling in Mexico and want to add our Mexican number to our account.

So far, we have not been successful. The number is declared invalid.

Any ideas?
Possible to have account verification via email instead?
Earlier today, we were given no other choice but to use our Canadian number to receive a text message.

Paypal is country specific so you have to open a paypal account in the country you reside in and add an address / phone number / bank accounts / cards from within that country.

Best not to use it internationally as you may hit security issues/roadblocks.

Thanks so much for your answer. Knowledgeable and complete. We are in an Airbnb which has the whole thing with PayPal sorted somehow and actually channels the payments through UK for some reason. Good to know to avoid using it. Thanks very much
