Receipt for something I didn't purchase?

Good morning all -  This is my first time here ... can't seem to find Paypal HELP ... very frustrating!

I received an email and the subject was SUSPICIOUS: Receipt for your payment!  I opened the email

and it's confirming the sale of a complete DVD set to somebody else, and her name is on the "ship to".

I checked my paypal account and the $ was not taken out of my account [YET?]  The sellers email address

does not work [what a surprise].  Any suggestions?  What  hsould I do next?  Forget getting hold of Paypal!!!

Thank you for any suggestions.

Thank you for your response ... were you actually charged the amount?

What did you wind up doing about it?  Thanks.

Hi AnnieT-

This is a common phishing technique, as the sender wants you to click on a link in the email that does not take you to PayPal, but looks like PayPal.

If you want to confirm that a payment has not been made from your PayPal account, open a new browser window and login at www.paypal.com.  Do not click on links in emails that claim to be from PayPal.

If you actually see an unauthorized transcation, report it to us securely through Contact Us on your Account Overview or Help Center screens.

Also, if you are unsure if an email is from PayPal or not, you can always send it to spoof@paypal.com so that we can review it for you.

This information, and much more is available in our Security Center...there is a link at the top of most pages within PayPal.  The Online Safety Essentials area there has information on red flags for phishing emails, tips for protecting your identity against theft while online and some tools like Iconix email notification where you can quickly confirm if an email is actually from PayPal or not.

Thanks,

Jason

Hi All -

Thank you ALL for your responses.  It dawned on me today that I had an email for paypal

to forward emails like this.  I forwarded the email I received to spoofatpaypal.com.  In less

than 10 minutes I had a response.  I was told that the email I got is a "comon phishing

technique and indeed somebody was trying to compromise my account.  Didn't happen

fortunately because I didn't open the 'link' and certainly would NOT have given any information.

So if any of you find yourselves lost like I was with nobody to explain this too at Paypal ...

remember this email address.  I feel atleast I'm covered in some way since I did notify them.

Good day all.

UGH! When I tried to send the prior notice, I was stopped because of the email address.

I typed spoof at paypal dot com  ..  This site won't let me use the "at" sign .  So it's spoof[at sign]

paypal dot com.

Hi AnnieT-

Thanks for the followup!  Because emails are one of the elements of an account login, the Community Help Forum is filtering them as an extra layer of security for our visitors.

As a moderator here, I made sure that the spoof email address also appeared in my post a bit further up the thread.  Keep on sending those emails to us!  That way, we can shut down whatever's hiding behind those links even if someone does happen to click on them.
