Offer Discount for Using anything OTHER than PayPal

I know I cannot charge extra for my customers to use PayPal, but can I offer them a discount if they pay using anything BUT PayPal?

eBay makes it all but impossible to get paid unless you use PayPal.  So I finally gave in, offered PayPal, sold two items last night (total $300+/-) and now have a 21 day hold on my own money.  **bleep** that.  I'm actually expected to send the items, get delivery confirmation, and receive positive feedback before my funds are released.

To ad insult to injury, I cannot even use the money I received to print UPS shipping labels to ship the items - I have to add more of my own money into the account.

Not if you're selling on ebay, you can't.

You must either offer Paypal or a merchant baking system (which is more expensive and more hassles).

You can offer Paymate or one of the other also-rans, but the customers won't use them and they won't buy from you if you insist they use them.

In talking with a group of individuals who regularly attend the same auction and sell on ebay and have had problems with paypal...the three of them have started excepting money orders and they all say they are selling more and the funds are theirs and not held for "ransom"

ebay sellers are allowed to accept money orders - that's always been the case.

But you can't ask for it, nor can you make it a requirement of the listings or the listings will get pulled.

Be careful, though - there are money order scams as well.  Your friends may just not have run into them yet.

So, let me get this strait - It is OK for PayPal to scam, cheat, hold our money for ransom because others are doing it?

Certainly that is not what you meant..

I see nothing addressed, anywhere, stating that it is not allowed to give a discount to a customer paying in some manner.

"We accept cash, check, money order, nigerian promises, fudge, and PayPal for payment.  Feel free to take a 10% discount if paying by cash, check, money order, nigerian promises, fudge

The eBay Accepted Payment Policy states...

For most categories, sellers can't ask buyers to:

  • Send cash through the mail
  • Send cash or money orders through instant, point-to-point cash transfer services (that are not banks) such as Western Union or MoneyGram
  • Mail checks or money orders (except for items in categories specifically permitted below)
  • Pay through bank-to-bank transfers (except for items in categories specifically permitted below)
  • Pay by "topping off" a seller's prepaid credit or debit card
  • Pay using online or other payment methods not specifically permitted in this policy

Communicating about payment methods

Sellers need to say in their listing specifically which payment methods they accept and only offer payment methods approved by eBay. Sellers aren't allowed to:

  • Ask buyers to contact them for additional payment methods
  • Offer a payment method to some buyers and not to others
  • Discourage buyers from using any payment method the seller specified in the listing
  • Ask buyers to pay using a method not mentioned in the listing.

This applies to all transaction-related correspondence between a seller and buyer as well as the listings.

Sellers aren't allowed to make statements like:=

  • “Contact us for payment information.”
  • “Contact us for other payment methods.”
  • “Contact us for your preferred payment method.”
  • “Buyers may request to pay by check or money order.”

There is only one exception: Sellers who offer payment upon pickup may include the following statement in their listings: “Contact me for payment methods to pay on pickup.”

??

Like I said, I see nothing addressed, anywhere, stating that it is not allowed to give a discount to a customer paying in some manner.

Could you help me by pointing out where the above would not be allowed?

EXAMPLE - Here in NJ, you are not allowed to charge a late charge on people who are late paying rent on thier homes.  Now all landlords, legally, raise the rent, but ofer a discount for paying on time, and it is allowed.

If you offer a discount to the buyer who pays using some other payment method, you are discouraging the buyer from using a payment method you have specified in the listing.

According to the eBay Accepted Payments Policy, that is specifically not permitted.

Are you asking about eBay policy, or... are you asking about PayPal policy, or... are you asking about non-eBay sales?

No, but Paypal does not do any of those things - they follow their agreement exactly.
