temporary holds & refunds

i had requested an item to be returned the same day i bought it. So in time i had recived the refund amount of $15.05 shown on the balance, so i knew i could transfer the money back to my account but instead i left it at the time. Days after i realized the refund was on some kind of temporary hold, then weeks after the temporary hold was removed and my balance was back to $0.00???   so i was thinking that my balance disapeared or something.

Two reasons for paypal holds on refunds.

1. When you pay a seller it is never instant, paypal pays the seller for you and then starts the process of uploading your funds from your funding source.
If the seller refunds before that payment has completed then you have to wait till it clears through to paypal then the refund is credited to you.

2. A seller can only issue a refund via funds in their paypal balance or an echeque So if its an echeque it has to clear through to the sellers paypal account and then it is credited to you and the hold lifted.

This is because paypal don't "refund in advance" like they do when you pay for an item.

Why is refund not in my paypal balance?

If you funded the original paypal payment with a card then once marked as completed it automatically goes back there but takes up to a week to process back to a bank account and a bit longer if it was a c.c.
