Transfer of money from bank account to paypal without ref no

I transferred money from my bank account to paypal and forgot to add my reference number. Silly I know but I am ow trying to track down where the money will be held and who I need to contact to get the money transferred into my paypal account.

Welcome to the PayPal community forum 

I would firstly advise to contact your bank to see if the funds have been returned to your bank. If your bank complete a full trace on the funds and are unable to locate them you can then contact PayPal to have a trace initiated.

I've made the same mistake. Are funds without a correct reference automatically returned? Or do I need to contact Paypal in order to do so? The funds have left my account. The payment is a little urgent; would it be ok to do another transfer with the correct information and anticipate the other transfer being returned to my bank account?
