Redirecting Donors back to Our Website

I have created a donation widget, using Paypal Labs fundraising widget, for a small school supplies donation campaign that our non-profit is hosting. I successfully created and added the widget to our website.

My problem occurs when our donors donate money, they are not directed back to our Thank You page (as I have stipulated in our company's Paypal acct profile), but rather shows a page with only the widget on it.

Any suggestions for how to rectify this would be helpful.

Hi chesterarthur,

Welcome to the community! 🙂

It sounds like "Auto-Return" may not be turned on in your PayPal profile.  While you can specify which address you want the customer to be sent to when they click "Return to Merchant" after checkout, it won't happen automatically unless Auto Return is enabled.  It's also possible that the fundraising widget is setting it's own return url.

To enable auto return:

- Log into your PayPal account

- Go to "Profile"

- Click on "My selling tools"

- Click "Update" next to "Website preferences"

- Click the "On" option under "Auto Return for Website Payments"

- Click "Save" at the bottom of the screen.

If it's still not working and auto return is enabled and your thank you page is listed as the Return URL on that same page, I would file a ticket with our Merchant Technical Support .

I hope this helps!   😄

What is the difference then between

1- auto return changed in the profile option and

2- "Take customers to this URL when they finish checkout" in the button options and

3-  IPN

Fadilf,

Auto Return applies to all Website Payments Standard ('button') transactions taking place on the account, irrespective of which button is used.

Whereas "Take customers to this URL when they finish checkout" is specific to that one button only.
Note: If Auto Return is enabled and this option is used, this option will override whatever URL is set up in Auto Return.

Lastly, IPN is completely different from this. IPN is a server-to-server notification mechanism for your website to automatically get notified about new incoming payments. For more info, see https://www.paypal.com/ipn/
