I have paid a significant amount of money to a scam company. Do i have had to have sent payment through PayPal or just my bank account to be entitled to a refund .?

Depends, how did you pay ??

Did you receive an invoice or did you use the Send Money feature ?

If you used the Send Money feature, did you choose "Friends and Family" or "Goods and Services" ?
Would need some more details, else we're just guessing.

You would need to contact your bank for assistance.   Because the payment did not go through PayPal, unfortunately  there's really not much they can do.

If you logged in through PayPal, and you paid with your linked bank account, you qualify for Purchase Protection. You will be able to see the transaction in your account activity.

I'm going to link the PayPal Resolution Center and details on how it works. If you see the transaction, you should be able to dispute it.

If you did not use PayPal to process your purchase, then yes, do what GreenGear said, contact your bank.
