How can I change the currency preference that I pay for items via Paypal.

I recently bought some items from China that were listed in US Dollars, when I checked my bank statement I'd been charged £1.25 per item for a currency converter fee.  As the items were only £1.50 each I effectively paid double.  Can anyone help please.

My Account -> Profile -> My Money -> My preapproved payments -> Update -> See Available Funding Sources (or Set Available Funding Sources) -> Conversion Options (for card you'd like to change this option)-> Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice -> Submit

These _erks crewed me with double convertion fee where my card was in USD and invoice in USD but thanks to PayMore my USD invoice was converted to national currency and then taken from USD card where it took another fee.

I lost about 7%. Actually it wasn't very much thanks to small incvoice but I'd rather throw those money away than feeling how I was raped by them. They try to work on Casino scheme where "Casino never loose".

Hi Tiffanys-,

Thank you for posting!

You can manage your PayPal balances via Currency Converter. You can transfer some or all of your PayPal balance from one currency to another.

Here's how to convert your balance to another currency:

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Click PayPal balance under your profile photo.
  3. Click Manage currencies.

Currency conversions are not available for PayPal accounts in Argentina, Brazil, and Malaysia.

If your card is run in a currency different to your local currency, you can contact our Customer Support and request for the card to be set up in that currency. This will cause that all transactions funded from that particular card will be charged in the card’s currency.

If you need any further assistance, I would recommend you calling PayPal Customer Services by clicking onto Contact us on any PayPal page as they will be able to help.

We also provide support via Social Media (24/7). You can contact us directly on Twitter @AskPayPal or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/PayPalUK.

Hope it helps.

Anna

Hi Anna,

thanks for the reply.

I have spent considerable time on the phone to PayPal over the last year to sort this problem out. It would be really good if PayPal were to give the customer the option of what currency their card will be charged in online - rather than making the customer phone the helpline all the time to get the currency changed for their credit card. Also the PayPal helpline does not seem to be available during the normal day time hours where I live…

Hi Ajvar,

Yes, this is very frustrating...

Do you have preloaded money on your PayPal account? I don't have preloaded money on my account...

I have my travel credit card linked to my PayPal account and do the currency conversion through my bank. However, to avoid having to phone PayPal everytime before I purchase anything in a foreign currency, I have set up two credit cards with my account and asked PayPal to set each one to charge in two foreign currencies. Hopefully, this will have the issue sorted for me!

Thank you so much for this information how to disable this annoying conversion which Paypal started to do recently!

And what is more funny, when I called customer support by phone, the girl told me that there is no way to avoid this conversion! She told me that since she works there it is like that. So they do it on purpose just to cheat people.

In the past I had an opportunty to decide which currency to be charged at every single payment.

And also I don't have an opportunity to chose which credit cards should be charged, What's the point to have more than one registered in Paypal credit card? I asked the girl from support the same question and she answered me that I have to change my default card every time I want to pay with different card that the last time.

Now I see that there are in 'Set available funding sources' opportunity to select checkbox for whch card to be used.

Now I selected 2 cards, I hope next time will have an opportunity to chose like it was before.

One last thing - I have a checkbox in green telling me that they  will use my paypal acount mney first if available when do next purchase but this does not happen.

So I am really disappointed from Paypal and that they cheat me like that. If I have an opportunity I would not use them any more. Unfrtunately they are a kind of monopolist.

Ajvar, I don't know if you are religious. But I sincerely pray that you will find solutions to your problems.

Thanks a bunch.

I see no reason why PayPal doesn't place this option in the Send Payments page.

My case is unique because I would have paid far less with the PayPal conversion process than without it. But my bank didn't approve the transaction because the would loose.

PayPal uses the official rate, my bank uses a rate that is far higher than the official Central bank rate.

Thank you very much for this!

I also lost about 7% exchange rate on every eBay purchase.

This really p*ssed me off, because, during the years I had to change this, like once every year. Always suddenly, without any information. When this 'happened' again, a couple of months ago, and I couldn't find the settings anymore, I decided to stop using eBay and PayPal altogether

I even contacted the Swedish PayPal customer support about this, several times.

I got very strange answers, like "Currency conversions depends on which platform you use", and "It depends on the card issuers local currency". I NEVER got an correct answer, they pretended to not understand the question.

It's obvious that this is a strategic business decision, to 'hide' this option.

I suppose this option will disappear completely in the future. PayPal must make money from somewhere, now when they're not associated with eBay anymore, and this way they scam every transaction.

And this is even worse...

Made an eBay purchase a couple of months ago with PayPal charging me in local currency, with the standard 7% overcharged exchange rate, from SEK to USD. The purchased item never got delivered, so I used the Money Back Guarantee and got a refund.

And guess what? 7% overcharged exchange rate again, from USD to SEK

So, to sum up:

No goods delivered, for a 14% charge.
