Need to add a new email address but system does not allow

Hello
A client has sent money to the wrong email address (a gmail address instead of the one on my own domain). I tried to set up the gmail address but the system says:
"You have already requested money from this email address. For security purposes, you are not allowed to add this email address to your PayPal account."
I think that when I first set up my Paypal business account I tested email invoicing by sending myself an invoice by email. Now I cannot add this account.
I did email Paypal direct but have heard nothing back.
Is there a way to get my Gmail email on there?

Hi there Jonners,
It sounds like the old email address has been added to another PayPal account in the past or like you say a transaction is still pending.
Best option here is if you call customer service, this way we can search our systems for anywhere it has been used and help you with activating it on your new PayPal account to allow the funds to come through. The buyer may have the option to cancel the transaction also if it states 'Unclaimed'
