I bought an item having previously topped up my Paypal buying account from my selling account balance. For some reason Paypal tried to debit my credit card. This was refused (old card).

Now trying to contact PP by phone to sort but can't get past the requirement to enter card number which it won't accept as it's now been deleted.

Any advice please?

Hi GrahamF,

If you have a PayPal balance and we are trying to debit your recent payment attempt from your card that is registered, I can only think that the payment you are trying to send is in a different currency then the currency in your balance.

For example, if you have a GBP balance and you have been trying to send a payment in USD, our system won't debit the funds in your PayPal balance and you will only have the option to fund your payment with a credit/debit card or bank account. If this is the case, you should transfer your balance to the currency in which you are making the payment and this should work for you.

We're introducing a new and improved Profile to some customers. Until all customers are using the new Profile, there are 2 sets of instructions on how to do this. Please follow the instructions that match what you see on the site.

Here’s how to convert your balance to another currency:

1. Go to www.paypal.co.uk and log in to your account.
2. Click ‘Profile’ near the top of the page.
3. Click ‘Currency Balances’ under ‘Financial Information.’ (Don't see this step? Follow the instructions below.)
4. Enter the amount you want to convert under ‘Currency Exchange.’
5. Select the currency to convert the funds from.
6. Select the currency to convert the funds to.
7. Click ‘Calculate’ to see the currency conversion.
8. Click ‘Start Exchange’ to transfer the funds.
9. Click ‘Exchange Currency’ to confirm the transfer.

Or

1. Go to www.paypal.co.uk and log in to your account.
2. Click ‘Profile’ near the top of the page.
3. Click ‘My money.’
4. Click ‘Currencies’ beside PayPal balance.
5. Enter the amount you want to convert under ‘Currency Exchange.’
6. Select the currency to convert the funds from.
7. Select the currency to convert the funds to.
8. Click ‘Calculate’ to see the currency conversion.
9. Click ‘Start Exchange’ to transfer the funds. 
10.  Click ‘Exchange Currency’ to confirm the transfer.
