change email address

i am treing to chaange my email address. When I try to add new email address I get this pop up that says:

We’re sorry. You can’t claim the money with this account because it's already linked with another user. Try asking your sender to send to a different email address if you have one.

Well, you can't use an email address which linked to another PayPal account.

How did you get your email address?  Do you know anyone else using your email address?  Where else have you used this address?  How long have you   had this email address?

1) I do not know if the email address that I want to stop useing is linked to another account but I doubt that it is because I have never had any other paypal account

2) I got the email address when I set it up maybe 20 years ago when people didn't have emai.

3) No one has ever used my email address.

4) I have used this email address for everything

5) the email address that I want to remove is associated with a business that I have owned for 40 years. I have sold that business and all email addresse were sold with the business. therefore I am removing that email address from all my accounts and changing to a gmail address.

So, someone else now own one of our PayPal email addresses and you no longer have authority over that email address.  Does the owner of that email address also have your PayPal password?

I think your only option is to phone PayPal customer service for help.
