Linking bank account and credit or debit card

I linked my bank account to PayPal for the sole purpose that if I dont have enough money on my debit card for a purchase I can then use my bank account. So now I have to link my card also so whats the point of linking my bank account then? Your saying that I cant complete the purchase cause I dont have enough money on my card to cover it. That is the reason I linked my bank account so I would have enough for purchases.  Anybody help with a why or if Im doing something wrong

If you only have a bank account linked then paypal like you to have a back up card linked as well incase the payment from your bank account fails for lack of funds.
