Waiting for refund

I purchased a personalised triple ring (September 2014) from a jewellery maker from a page on facebook. I liased with the lady about everything from the type of metal (sterling silver) to the type of the names. I then paid for the item. When it arrived,I wore it for one day and it made my finger go green and the 'coating ' inside came off. I sent photos of the issues. The seller was going to contact her supplier and was promised a new ring. The seller eventually came back saying she couldn't get an answer from the supplier and would try another. I left it a while has I knew she had had a personal bereavement and illness. When I got in contact after 12 months of no new ring, I was promised a refund. Again I waited 6 months and nothing. I contacted her again to be told her step mother was ill and again promised a refund. Today I logged onto facebook to find the seller is closing down the business. I feel quite angry that I still haven't received any refund. What can I do? I am empathetic to her personal issues but what can I do to get a refund ? I think I have been patient after 21 months of waiting.

I think PayPal doesn't offer protection for custom-made items: https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/paypal-safety-and-security It has also been very long time since the transaction, much much longer than PayPal's 180 day claim time.

Thank you for the reply. I guessed as much. I think I shall just have to kiss the money goodbye. Pretty sad when I feel I have been more than welling to help the seller.

The problem is likely that you waited too long to take action.

If the item is not sterling silver and it was claimed to be sterling, you problably could have filed a disupute with PayPal or your credit card company for an item not as described or even as fraud.

It's too late now to do anything.

In future, never let a seller string you along until time runs out to open a dispute.

I guess I was being too sympathetic to her personal issues. I don't think there will be a next time!
