Received an unexpected money request for $300 from an unknown person

I logged into my email this evening and found a strange email from PayPal saying I received a money request. It appears to be a genuine PayPal email, and Gmail shows the verified icon for PayPal next to it. I don't recognize the requesting person's name or email address though, and they are asking for $300. The message was as follows:

[Name] would like to be paid through PayPal.

Note from [Name]: Hello, I've find a non authorization transaction from my paypal to yours for 300$. Please write me an email - [username]@gmail,com. I'll send you a copy of transaction. Best wishes. [username]@gmail,com

I went to PayPal (not by clicking on any of the links in the email) and logged into my account. The request was there. I saw a "cancel" button so I clicked that, and I got a message saying PayPal would notify them. I'm sure this is some kind of scam, but why on earth would they think I'd just send them the money? And do I need to be concerned? As far as I'm aware, all you need to send a money request is a person's email address. Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks in advance!

I would definitely change password and/or link an entirely new email address as the primary, then delete the old one.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

Requesting money IS requesting money as for selling goods and services and there will be a fee.  If somoene want to send a gift that someone must start the process without a request.

I received a messag tonight that reads "<removed>would like to be paid through PayPal. Note from Aaron Jones: Hello, I've find a non authorization transaction from my paypal to yours for 300$. Please write me an email - <removed>. I'll send you a copy of transaction. Best wishes. <removed> Details Requested Amount: $300.00 USD Your Email Address" I deleted it, changed my password & sent to Spoof email. I haven't purchased or sold anything recently. Is this fraud? After I cancelled the money request I got a Fatal Failure message
