I received emails from "service @ paypal.com" asking me to make shipping and insurance payments to a china account before my funds could be released. As the email bore a sermingly valid paypal email address, I made the payments. If the whole thing is a scam, is paypal liable for my loss since the company should ensure that only authorised employees can send messages from their email address?

Scammers can make emails "look" as if they come from a genuine paypal email address but they are not really. If you click on the properties of the email odds are you will see the real email address it comes from.

Paypal have nothing to do with it.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE A TYPICAL PAYPAL SCAM....READ THIS AND SEE.

You will get/got a "fake" email that looks as though it is from paypal.....it isn't.

It will say the buyer has paid ...you won't have been paid.

They will tell you that the payment is released when you provide paypal with a tracking/shipping number......this won't happen.

OR

If the item requires shipping they will tell you that they will pay you extra and you must pay the agent via western union / moneygram BEFORE the funds are released to you.

They are not interested in the item, they just want the western union etc funds and you will never see money in your paypal balance.

They also threaten legal action...have a laugh at that one and ignore it as its rubbish.

Paypal NEVER tell you to send trackable, they advise it for seller protection etc but it is not compulsory.

Paypal NEVER tell you to send an item before the payment is showing in your paypal account.

Paypal NEVER expect you to use a rival money transfer service.

The message was from service@ paypal.com so that must be an insider job. If paypal is negligent with their security and allows unauthorised users to send messages via their email address, doesn't that make paypal liable? I made a report to spoof@ paypal.com but there has not been any acknowledgement or response. If the paypal scams you said had occurred several times why hasn't paypal done something to stop misuse of their email address?

I have yet to hear from paypal after reporting the emails received from service@ paypal.com. I have been a IT manager myself and I have confirmed with a cybersecurity specialist that the email address must have been created by someone (eg system administrator ) within paypal. It could be an old email address that paypal no longer use. After reporting to paypal I continue to receive messages from service@ paypal.com demanding payment from me. It is quite unsettling as it points to a security breach similar to hackers who hacked into my google account to spam my contacts.

Ok, I have withdraw my earlier message.

When I rechecked on my windows-based PC, I could see that the service@ paypal.com was just a label for another address. On my Android phone, it was shown as an email address.

I close my case.
