Auto-return problem

I'm having a problem with auto-return. 9 times out of ten the customer is returned to my website with an error message even though the order has gone through correctly and payment completed. Occasionally it works correctly, and after making many experimental purchases I found that there are two different screens show when you make the payment, and this seems to have something to do with whether it works right or not. Can anyone tell me what the difference is and what triggers one rather than the other?
Screenshot 1 below followed by Screenshot 2 is the sequence when auto return works correctly and the customer gets confirmation of the order from my website.
The next image below (Screenshot 5) followed by Screenshot 3, then screenshot 4 is what happens most of the time, and the customer returns to my website with a message saying there has been an error.
Can somebody help me please.
