A Facebook group, called British In Portugal have set up an email for paypal, to receive ongoing donations from it's members, but are asking people to mark it as Friends and Family. They say it is to avoid fees. Is this legal? They are not registered as an organisation, charity, association. They claim to be working with the British Consulate, but the Consulate deny this. Many have already donated, despite Admin refusal to show any expenses incurred...they claim €2,000 has been spent so far. Anyone who has asked for any form of proof has been blocked and banned by admin on the group. Originally the donations were going into a personal paypal account, but it has now changed to the name of their group. If an organisation is asking for donations, but telling people to use the family and friends option, to avoid paying tax on the money received in Portugal, is this legal?
