Getting a return of USD in the ORIGINAL AUD amount...

I sent USD $39.04 (AUD57.28) to what I thought was the recipient for an item. However it turns out I unknowingly sent it to the wrong recipient as it turns out there are TWO recipients on PayPal with not only the SAME NAME!, but also the SAME PAYPAL ADDRESS! Even the intended recipient was unaware of this other (imposter?) recipient. As I said even their PayPal addresses are the same. Also the correct intended recipient lives in the USA and this other one lives in Germany. Yet when I went to send the payment only ONE recipient showed so obviously I thought nothing of it as the name was CORRECT. Now if PayPal had got their act together and showed both when I typed in the name then I would've immediately seen there were TWO and promptly taken the necessary action to ensure the CORRECT recipient was selected to send payment to. I therefore feel PayPal should refund the FULL AUD57.28 to me! Now I've always understood you CAN'T have two recipients with the exact same name! Surely PayPal's system would've not allowed a name that was ALREADY IN USE! But apparently it does! Well that's NOT my fault! ... View more

I had the same question/issue, I found out you can only do this in the browser. In the app I found no option to choose between PayPal's exchange fee or my card's, but in the browser it let me. ... View more

@DarkAvenger    Online currency rate to rate conversions are just that, a comparison. However if you go on holiday and want to purchase that currency from your bank etc then you won't pay the online conversion rate you would pay a higher rate so that the business supplying you the funds get paid for doing so. Same as paypal, you pay for the convenience of them changing the currency for you. ... View more

Ok, I found out in a very stressful way the rate given through PayPal's 'Currency Conversion Tool' is indeed the 'exact' same rate as given through your account and of course if you were to purchase an item so at least I know I don't need access to my account in order to know PayPal's exchange rate on a given day.   I'm going to try and file a complaint against PayPal regarding access to my account by following the advice found on the 'FairShake' Consumer Rights website:   If PayPal’s customer service isn’t getting to the bottom of your complaint, the company also offers a way on its website to file a formal complaint. You can do this by going to PayPal’s “Contact us” page and clicking “Feedback and formal complaints.” From there, you can choose from a number of categories. Choose what best fits your complaint out of:   Opening a claim for an item you never received or that didn’t match its description. Managing your profile and transactions. Complaining about the decision made for a dispute you filed. Complaining about poor customer service you received. Complaining about a limitation on your account. Complaining about PayPal policy or a product feature. Complaining about a transaction. Filing a formal complaint will open a ticket with PayPal’s customer service that you can escalate as needed.   In my case the relevant category would be 'Complaining about a "limitation" on your account', but also perhaps 'Complaining about a "PayPal policy" or a product feature' since PayPal are "forcing" me to participate in a 'verification' process that asks for information I'm physically unable to provide in order to access my account! Especially when I've already been verified by providing account information known only to myself as the rightful account holder i.e. my phone number and bank account number. Further that in the past there was an option to 'forgo' this secondary verification by the inclusion of a 'Not Right Now' button - which has now been removed!   I'm assuming I can select only one of those categories in lodging my complaint so perhaps I'll lodge my complaint twice - once under "Complaining about a limitation on your account" and again under "Complaining about a PayPal policy or product feature" since both equally apply!         ... It used to be if one wanted to view PayPal's exchange rates you would: 1) Click on 'PayPal balance' 2) Select 'Manage currencies' 3) Select 'Balance conversion' or 'Payment conversion' 4) Enter the required information under 'Currency exchange' and click 'Calculate' Now however after PayPal's Friday night (03 Aug 2018) update this is no longer possible! since the 'Manage currencies' option has been removed! The PayPal customer service rep I spoke to says the only way now is to add a currency ('purchase' currency) and then add money to your balance in that currency. But I don't want to do that! Since obviously that would surely require a currency conversion ('purchasing' currency) righ then and there! But I don't want to convert part of my balance to another currency just to view the rate as I need to know what the rate is beforehand! That's the whole point! I just want to see what the rate is! I don't want to purchase anything! and WHY should I have to! just to see what the rate is! I suggested to the customer service rep that the latest update omitting the 'Manage currencies' option is a SERIOUS OVERSIGHT! Does anyone have any ideas on a workaround to view the exchange rates without having to 'purchase' anything! since that's clearly a case of putting the cart before the horse! ... View more
