It has happened to me repeatedly that the shipping costs that are calculated on ebay end up being HIGHER when I go to Paypal to complete the transaction! Nothing changes...the size, the shape, etc are the same...but, just now, one item that ebay calculated would be $5, will actually cost $8.28 when I finish at Paypal! That will cost ME, and Not the buyer!
This is just not right....ebay and Paypal are COSTING ME MONEY!!
Anyone have any ideas about this?
Thanks!

Instead of using the calculate option, charge your own shipping. The option is there for flat rate shipping where you can charge your own price for shipping. Then, if you are short on shipping, you can blame yourself. Or, ship everything in USPS flat rate boxes where you know exactly what to charge for shipping and you wont lose anymore.

Every time this has been brought up, it has been an error on the members part.
Ebay only uses the info you give it. Package size, use the measurements (10x10x8) , not small, large. etc.
Also if you have a handling charge the ebay amount will be higher that the paypal postage

I did double-check all the information Before I decided to post the problem here. In fact, all of the exact information that was entered in the shipping section of the item auction was already pre-filled and duplicated when I went to Paypal to ship it! So....Nothing changed, but the rate.
And now....the item has been paid for....at a THIRD amount! $9.55 for Priority Mail. I have No idea where That figure came from!!! I show the package size as 14x12x3 in both locations....1.6 ozs...and at ebay it put $5.00. When I got to Paypal, it came up $8.28!? Now, $9.55?! Guess the mailman needed a latte, while handling the package.

Where did you see the $5.00 eBay rate... was it when you were looking at the eBay listing?
Did you add any extra services like insurance or signature confirmation?
Priority Mail rates are determined by package size, package weight and destination zone. The Priority Mail Rates for a package which weighs 1.6 lbs are...
Zone 1 - $5.00
Zone 2 - $5.00
Zone 3 - $5.35
Zone 4 - $5.95
Zone 5 - $7.50
Zone 6 - $8.10
Zone 7 - $8.60
Zone 8 - $9.55

The $8.28 PayPal rate you mentioned is likely for Parcel Post... $8.09 Parcel Post shipping to zone 8 plus 19 cents for Delivery Confirmation. The Parcel Post Rates for a package which weighs 1.6 lbs are...
Zone 1 - $4.90
Zone 2 - $4.90
Zone 3 - $5.15
Zone 4 - $5.70
Zone 5 - $7.02
Zone 6 - $7.33
Zone 7 - $7.62
Zone 8 - $8.09

I am going through the whole process of listing the same item on ebay right now...in the Shipping Details section it asks for the package type, weight and dimensions...Priority Mail, 1lb 10 oz, and 14"x12"x3". The cost it calculates is $5.00. When I go to Paypal, with that same information, the cost is $8.82. At the Post Office it is $9.55.
Those are the facts....I have no explanation for the discrepancies.
This has happened before, and ebay is costing me money because of it.
I get No valid reasons from ebay or Paypal, and hoped to find the answer here.
Thanks.

You know.....now that I think about it...maybe it is a problem with the Zones and ebay's shipping calculations. Maybe it is showing me the $5.00 cost, based on shipping within the Same Zone, My Zone?! So, then I would not have any way to know at my end what the actual rate will be until it is over, and someone from another Zone is paying for the item, and the shipping cost is Then calculated, based on that Zone!?
It used to be So Much Easier, before the Post Office started charging different rates for different areas, and different sizes!

Yep... that's where I was heading when I asked where you were seeing the $5.00 shipping charge. When you look at your PayPal payment received, is the buyer paying the correct shipping, or... is the buyer paying the $5.00 amount.

The buyer paid the $9.55! I felt so bad about it that I paid for Insurance myself, just in case! So, what I thought was going to cost $5.00 ended up being $10.57!!
Still, I think it is a funny system. With all the different rates, it's not easy making everyone happy! A looky-loo questioned the fact that it would cast $8 to mail a Laser Disc, and I assured him that I was showing only $5...well, I guess I could use Media Mail for that, if they really want to go Cheap! I prefer to have some assurance and tracking, and don't think there is any with Media Mail....buyer beware!
So....maybe I now know more of what to expect when I list, with the shipping rates. I always try to be fair, and never charge more than the actual cost to ship (I waste so much of My time, that it Can't be worth much!)....
Thank you for your help!!
Bruce
