Debit bank accounts no longer accepted?

I have had my current debit / checking bank account connected as my preferred payment method for a long time. I have used it for more than 2000 transactions and I have never had any issue. Before that I had a different debit card connected, used for many thousands of transactions over a decade previous to the current debit bank account.

Today when I tried to make a payment it said I need to update my payment method. I signed in and it said that my current debit / checking bank account is not accepted.  I did not get an email notifying me that they stopped accepting it or that they required a different payment or any email at all about this.

Stranger still, the last two transactions I made went through but then paypal didn't accept the payment so now I have a balance on paypal for the first time ever and I have been using paypayl for almost 13 years with debit/bank account.  Did they decide to no longer accept debit (and if so , why can't I find the press release info in the news anywhere?), or would this more likely be something related to my personal situation?

I don't have any credit cards.

Hi there @Voggas

Welcome back to the PayPal Community Forum.

I am very sorry to hear about what has happened, this sounds strange!

I can see you are located in Canada, you can use Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express cards to make or send payments with PayPal, see: What debit or credit cards can I use with PayPal?

I am unsure as to why this happened. However, sometimes we will request you use an alternative card/bank if our security system spots any error or risk. Although I don’t have a specific reason, it’s usually for the safety of our customers. I know this can be an upsetting situation so I do apologize.

I would also check that your cards are all confirmed and that they are not expired or close to their expiry date. Also, if your address changes, it is important to ensure the billing address matches.

I hope this helps clear up the situation a bit!

Rebecca
