Purchases deducted from other than preferred method

I have designated on my PayPal the method of payment I prefer for purchases and auctions.  So, I thought PayPal would deduct money from that account to pay a merchant when I pay via PayPal.  However, in the past week, about 5 of my purchases which include grocery deliver, medical supplies from EBay, and merchandise from EBay have been routed to my personal checking account.  Now, my checking account is overdrawn. I have talked to the merchants, my bank, and PayPal.  PayPal says that somehow, despite what I have set, they route a purchase to a different funding source if I have made a previous purchase from the merchants.  As best I can tell, they have internally set up what they call “autopay.”  I am soooo upset.

Not helpful.  People do not want money coming out of their bank accounts.  In my case, I have more than one bank that I have accounts with.  Paypal took the money from the wrong bank.  My preferred card is a debit card to the correct bank.  This has happened more than once and for substantial amounts of money.  There is problem.

If you look at your PayPal transaction history, do you see any pattern? I have 2 eBay auctions which were 'autopay' that debited PayPal balance and/or bank account instead of my preferred credit card. I have eBay BIN before and after that went to the preferred credit card as expected. Either eBay is using 2 different interfaces or it's the same interface and eBay is passing incomplete information which triggers the fraud AI.

ANSWER !!  I was finally able to speak to a Supervisor after pushing the issue with Customer Service. He walked me through the process of why this is taking place. With nearly every business transaction, your preferred card used for that initial payment is kept in “Autopay” and utilized as your preferred method of payment with that business. To my surprise, there was a very long list of businesses/vendors. With each business, you need to open it where you will see your preferred payment method. This will override any preferred payment method that you have chosen for payments on your PayPal account.
In order to change this, I had to sign into the following:
1.  In PayPal, Click on Settings  (the object that looks like a wheel at the top right.)

2.  You will see a blue and a white bar with different topics towards the top of the page. Find the white bar with different topics and choose “Payment “ (click on it)

3.  Scroll down to the bottom and choose Automatic Payments

4.  You will find an Autopay section with active and inactive accounts.
You will need to choose each business/vendor individually in order to see the preferred payment method that you may have chosen for that business/vendor. In some cases, you may not have one and this is where you can make a choice on PayPal when you make a purchase. They are listed in alphabetical order and when you reach the bottom, choose “More activity” and it will bring up additional vendors.

I had no idea that this existed and there are also many other customers of PayPal with the same question.
This answered a question that I have had for quite some time. I was able to go in and make quite a few changes. I hope that this helps!

You may have found your answer, but I was already aware of the separate settings for each vendor. My settings are correct and have not changed. There's only one autopay profile for eBay, but the actual payment method changed when the purchase was a preapproved auction.
