Check if you had a subscription set up and cancel it?
Click on the profile tab (icon next to log out) > Click on payments third option along on the thick blue band top of page > "manage pre-approved payments.''

Should the end-user have to after any purchase go through the PayPal app and look to verify that automatic payments haven't been turned on?

The worst feature - so anti-consumer.

As a buyer you must agree to a billing agreement/subscription before a merchant can take a payment from your PayPal account.
If you don't notice during checkout OR don't cancel then it auto renews. Be careful what you are accepting.

I had Uber as a seller for years and did NOT get any information that they were given autopay status when the feature was introduced in 2023. Yesterday $300 was charged to my PayPal account from someone using Uber in Australia (I have never been to Australia). I stopped the autopay feature for Uber this morning, but it will activate again when I use them next time. I have to go into my settings and deactivate it every time I use Uber. Complete failure by PayPal.

This is disgraceful and did you get your $300 back @Migao ?
I used to have the same problem with ebay years ago until they stopped making it default.
And Steam purchases still need to remember to uncheck that box because they make it default to make a "Fast Checkout" next time you purchase.
My password is meant for security when i make a purchase to prevent exactly what happened to yourself!

Yes, I contacted PayPal and they credited my bank account back.
It took a few days and some documentation that I sent them.

Funny thing is, I could see in my Uber Account where the guy lived and that he ordered Chinese foodthrough Uber eats from a nearby restaurant.

Your vendors are burying this "agreement" it is not clear to the buyer that they agreeing to a subscription. Vendors make it appear that you agreeing to use Paypal as the method of payment.

Paypal allowing this hurts the customer and opens them to risk

PayPal MUST IMMEDIATELY STOP automatic payments to TEMU as it happens for all other sellers, it worked instantly for all other sellers but for temu.com it says: "Status: CANCELLATION PENDING"
Furthermore, the section dedicated to automatic payments is not easily accessible AND THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE because, for example, now the link to the automatic payments page is no longer available.
