Preferred account was closed but receipt shows paid from it

I closed my Preferred account but hadn't removed it from Paypal.  My husband used it for payment but also entered a credit card that isn't linked.  Receipt and Paypal shows it was paid through that closed account.  Will it automatically switch to backup account?  Or will it reject and should we wait for the vendor to contact?

I understand you have questions concerning a closed payment method. Your financial institution should notify us within 3-5 business days that the account is closed. Once we're notified, we'll debit your backup payment method. If both payment methods are denied, the PayPal account balance will be debited for the purchase amount. (This can cause a negative balance.) If needed, you can reach Customer Support by clicking 'Contact' at the bottom of any PayPal website for further assistance. Support is also available through Facebook Private Message or Twitter Direct Message.
